Inherited from Danish sprog with native Norwegian -k and a more etymological and phonetic vowel spelling. Further from Middle Low German sprâke, from Proto-West Germanic *sprāku. The form was already used by Knudsen, but was one of those criticized for going beyond the “educated vernacular” (which had Danish /ɡ/ in this word).
