Probably from Proto-Germanic *smiþōną (“to forge, fashion”), then cognate with Old English smiþian, Old High German smidōn, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍃𐌼𐌹𐌸𐍉𐌽 (gasmiþōn). Another possibility is derivation from Old Norse smíð (“crafting, making”).
