From the same stem as Latvian slīdēt (“to slide”) and slaids (“slender, slim”): Proto-Baltic *slid + -ens, from Proto-Indo-European *sleydʰ- (“slippery, to slide”). A dialectal variant slids (“slippery”), without the suffix, also exists (compare Lithuanian slidùs (“slippery”)).
