Influenced by Old Danish slenghe and Danish slænge, from Old Norse slængja, slyngja, causative of slængva, sløngva, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *slangwijaną.
Compare Norwegian Nynorsk slengja, which retains the diphthong from Old Norse; also Icelandic slengja, Old Swedish slængia → Swedish slänga, Old Danish slængiæ → slenghe → Danish slænge. Perhaps with influence from Middle Low German slengen (Bavarian schlengen).
