From Proto-Baltic *skerd-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerdʰ- (“to cut”), an extension of *(s)ker- (“to cut”). Cognate with Latvian šķērst (“to dissect”), Middle High German scherzen (“to cut off, shorten”), Proto-Germanic *skurtaz (“short”), Proto-Slavic *skorda (“harrow”); see also Lithuanian skrósti (“to dissect”), Latvian šķirt (“to part; to divorce”).
