sivu
التعريفات والمعاني
== Finnish ==
=== Etymology ===
From earlier *sivu ~ *sipu (compare dialectal sipuun in Eurén 1860 for modern sivuan, form of the verb sivuta, Ingrian sivu, Karelian šivu, šivassa (“tilted, askew, off to the side”), šipah, šipa- in šipatuuli (“crosswind”), Ludian šivud (“small of the back”)), probably derived from Proto-Finnic *sipa (“strip, edge; small piece, fragment”) (whence also dialectal sipale (“shred, fragment”)) with semantic development from “strip (on a field)” → “strip on the edge of a field, edge of a field” → “edge, side” (note similar development in Võro siba (“strip (of land in a field, etc.); edge (of a fabric or garment)”), a cognate), and then later “page” (as the 'side' of a sheet of paper). For the -p- ~ -v- variation in the nominative, compare also havu < *havu ~ *hapu.
Earlier compared with Germanic words like Swedish sida, but such a comparison is phonetically untenable. However, the Swedish word has probably had semantic influence on the Finnish word (e.g. the development “side” → “page”).
