sivu

== Finnish == === Etymology === From earlier *sivu ~ *sipu (compare dialectal sipuun in Eurén 1860 for modern sivuan, form of the verb sivuta, Ingrian sivu, Karelian šivu, šivassa (“tilted, askew, off to the side”), šipah, šipa- in šipatuuli (“crosswind”), Ludian šivud (“small of the back”)), probably derived from Proto-Finnic *sipa (“strip, edge; small piece, fragment”) (whence also dialectal sipale (“shred, fragment”)) with semantic development from “strip (on a field)” → “strip on the edge of a field, edge of a field” → “edge, side” (note similar development in Võro siba (“strip (of land in a field, etc.); edge (of a fabric or garment)”), a cognate), and then later “page” (as the 'side' of a sheet of paper). For the -p- ~ -v- variation in the nominative, compare also havu < *havu ~ *hapu. Earlier compared with Germanic words like Swedish sida, but such a comparison is phonetically untenable. However, the Swedish word has probably had semantic influence on the Finnish word (e.g. the development “side” → “page”). === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈsiʋu/, [ˈs̠iʋu] Rhymes: -iʋu Syllabification(key): si‧vu Hyphenation(key): si‧vu === Noun === sivu page, side (one surface of a sheet of paper; one side of a paper leaf on which one has written or printed) page (one of the many pieces of paper bound together within a book or similar document) Synonym: lehti (“leaf”) (technical term, to distinguish from the sense 'one side of a paper leaf') (television) page (in teletext) (Internet) page (web page) (computing) page (screenful of text and possibly other content) (computing) page (memory page; block of contiguous memory of a fixed length) side (bounding straight edge of a two-dimensional shape) side (flat surface of a three-dimensional object; a face) Synonym: tahko flank (extreme left or right edge of a military formation) flank, side (flesh between the last rib and the hip) Synonym: kylki ==== Declension ==== ==== Derived terms ==== ==== Related terms ==== sipaista sipale sivaltaa ==== See also ==== siivu === References === === Further reading === “sivu”, in Kielitoimiston sanakirja [Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish]‎[1] (in Finnish) (online dictionary, continuously updated), Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen verkkojulkaisuja 35, Helsinki: Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskus (Institute for the Languages of Finland), 2004–, retrieved 3 July 2023 === Anagrams === Suvi, suvi, visu == Ingrian == === Etymology === Akin to Finnish sivu and Karelian šivu. === Pronunciation === (Ala-Laukaa) IPA(key): /ˈsiʋu/, [ˈs̠iʋuˑ] (Soikkola) IPA(key): /ˈsiʋu/, [ˈʃiʋuˑ] Rhymes: -iʋu Hyphenation: si‧vu === Noun === sivu side (body part) (in the plural) loins ==== Declension ==== ==== Derived terms ==== === References === Ruben E.
