Inherited from Latin sēpia. The phonological shift from the Latin -VpjV- to -Vtt͡ʃV- are usually outputs from an Old French or Norman stratum. Compare French seiche and Neapolitan seccia for a palatalized output among other Romance languages, and Italian seppia for a non-palatilized one. Cfr., for more, accia, facci, sacciu.
