Clipping of Shotokan, a style of karate. Originally mistakenly applied to the characters Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter II by translators working for Capcom USA, despite neither being practitioners of the style.

shoto (plural shotos)
(video games) In the Street Fighter series, either of the playable characters Ryu and Ken; by extension, several characters with similar attacks.
(video games, by extension) In fighting games generally, a playable character with the ability to shoot a horizontally traveling projectile, perform an uppercut and perform a horizontally travelling physical attack.
