From a variation sarralia (mentioned by Papias of Hierapolis (c. AD 60 – c. 130)), of further unknown origin. A hypothesis by Isidore of Seville (much later, between 600–625, see quotations) derives it as the neuter plural of *serrālis, from serra (“saw”) + -ālis (suffix forming adjectives).
