From Middle Dutch schranken (“to place crosswise, especially to cross one's legs”), derived from schranke. Compare German schräg (“skewed, oblique, slanted”). Not a direct cognate of German schränken, which is cognate with similarly umlauted Middle Dutch schrenken.
