From Middle Dutch scheminkel, from older siminkel (“monkey, ape”), ultimately from Late Latin *simiunculus or its feminine form, from simius (“monkey”) - or possibly a Dutch diminutive of Middle Dutch simme (“monkey, ape”) which is from a non-diminutive form of Latin simius.
