== Old Prussian == === Etymology === Uncertain. Likely, from earlier *samu̯aitē, from *samu̯aitjā- < *sanu̯aitjā- (“to come to an agreement”), from *san- (“co-, together”) +‎ waitiāt (“to talk”), the latter cognate with Lithuanian vaiténti (“to discuss”), Proto-Slavic *vě̑ťe (“council, veche”). The original meaning was “the time period between two meetings”; compare Czech rok (“year”) < “fate” < “speech”, and Arabic جُمُعَة (jumuʕa, “week”) < “to gather”.The -n- of *san- (later sen-; Proto-Balto-Slavic *sam-) was lost by assimilation: -nu̯- > -mu̯- > -u̯-. Alternatively, from earlier *sabaiťē < *sabaťē, from Old Polish sobota (“Saturday”).
