== Finnish == === Etymology 1 === From Proto-Finnic *satadak (“to fall”) (compare Estonian sadama), from Proto-Uralic *śada- (compare Southern Selkup соорогу (soorogu)), possibly borrowed from Indo-Iranian. ==== Pronunciation ==== IPA(key): /ˈsɑtɑːˣ/, [ˈs̠ɑ̝t̪ɑ̝ː(ʔ)] Rhymes: -ɑtɑː Syllabification(key): sa‧taa Hyphenation(key): sa‧taa ==== Verb ==== sataa (transitive, usually atelic, impersonal) to precipitate (to have water in the air fall to the ground): to rain, snow, sleet, hail sataa kaatamalla ― to rain cats and dogs Sataa (vettä). ― It's raining. (also figuratively) to rain (fall down from the sky like rain) ===== Usage notes ===== The same verb is used for all kinds of precipitation, whether it be rain, snow, sleet, hail or something else. If there is no context for which one is meant, sataa on its own is generally understood to refer to rain. The kind can be explicitly specified with modifiers: sataa vettä ― to rain sataa tihkua ― to drizzle sataa lunta ― to snow sataa räntää ― to sleet sataa rakeita ― to hail Although this verb can be used alone (as the single word sataa), it is very often used with an adverb of place, for example siellä (“there”). Since such adverbs are usually added without any literal meaning, they often don't need to be translated, but similar idiomatic use exists in English and other languages: ===== Conjugation ===== ===== Derived terms ===== ==== References ==== ==== Further reading ==== “sataa”, in Kielitoimiston sanakirja [Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish]‎[2] (in Finnish) (online dictionary, continuously updated), Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen verkkojulkaisuja 35, Helsinki: Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskus (Institute for the Languages of Finland), 2004–, retrieved 1 July 2023 === Etymology 2 === ==== Pronunciation ==== IPA(key): /ˈsɑtɑː/, [ˈs̠ɑ̝t̪ɑ̝ː] Rhymes: -ɑtɑː Syllabification(key): sa‧taa Hyphenation(key): sa‧taa ==== Numeral ==== sataa partitive singular of sata sata, kaksisataa, kolmesataa... ― one hundred, two hundred, three hundred... === Anagrams === aasta, saata, tasaa == Votic == === Pronunciation === (Luutsa, Liivčülä) IPA(key): /ˈsɑtɑː/, [ˈsɑtːɑ] Rhymes: -ɑtɑː Hyphenation: sa‧taa === Verb === sataa alternative spelling of satta === References === Hallap, V.; Adler, E.; Grünberg, S.; Leppik, M.
