Probably borrowed from Old Swedish sangare (“singer”). Compare with Väinämöinen, the singing hero. Another theory suggests it is derived from the verb sangata or sankailla, ("to resist, to defy, threaten"). Can be related to the words sankka, sakea, sangen (compare voimakas).
