This word entered standard German alongside sabbern from Low German [Term?]. Subsequently, the meaning of this term shifted; sabbern retains the original meaning, "drool". Compare southern Dutch zabberen, standard Dutch sabbelen. The nouns Sabber and Sabbel are also closely related.
