=== Etymology ===
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish سویلهمك, سویلمك (söylemek), from Old Anatolian Turkish سویلمك (söylemek, “to speak”), an alteration of Common Turkic *sözle- < *söz. See söz and sözle-.
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): /søj.leˈmec/
Rhymes: -ec
=== Verb ===
söylemek (third-person singular simple present söyler)
(transitive) to say, to tell
Synonym: demek
Kapıyı açmamızı söyledin. ― You told us to open the door.
(transitive) to mention
(transitive, + şarkı ~) to sing
(transitive, + yalan ~) to tell a lie
(transitive) to order food
Synonym: sipariş etmek
==== Usage notes ====
Söylemek differs from demek grammatically in that söylemek is used after nominal clauses constructed with the participle suffix -dik, while demek comes after finite forms. Using demek conjugates the previous clause as if they're the speaker who spoke said clause.
