=== Etymology ===
From Proto-Finnic *särmä, according to Aikio (2020) equivalent to särkeä (“to break”) + -mä. Cognate with Estonian särme and Veps särm, särmaine. Probably originally "strip, band, ribbon", later "(sharp) edge". Modern geometry sense was given to it by Finnish physician and author Samuel Roos.
