== Finnish == === Alternative forms === ryyhtyä (dialectal, Savonia) ryöhtyä (dialectal, South Karelia) === Etymology === Uncertain, related to Karelian ryyhtyö. SSA theorizes the etymology as follows: ryhtyä may be generalized from eastern dialectal ryyhtyä, ryöhtyä (according to the pattern Western huhtoa ~ Eastern huuhtoa), which in turn could be secondarily fronted from an original rohtua ~ ruohtua (or otherwise derived from ruoho), perhaps with influence from yhtyä. Originally, ryhtyä ~ ryyhtyä may have referred to developing a rash or being caught on something, from which the sense “to begin” may have developed (compare ruveta, if derived from rupi (“scab”)). === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈryhtyæˣ/, [ˈryçt̪yæ(ʔ)] Rhymes: -yhtyæ Syllabification(key): ryh‧ty‧ä Hyphenation(key): ryh‧tyä === Verb === ryhtyä (intransitive) to set out, start, begin [with illative or (with verbs) illative of third infinitive] ryhtyä töihin ― to start to work ryhtyä neuvotteluihin ― to start to negotiate ryhtyä toimenpiteisiin / ryhtyä toimiin ― to take measures / take action / take steps to become [with translative] (usually a proponent of a profession) (archaic) to grab, touch [with illative] (law) to touch or interact with something or someone in a criminal manner or with something obtained through criminal means [with illative] ryhtyä varastettuun tavaraan ― to receive stolen goods varastettuun tavaraan ryhtyminen ― receiving stolen goods ==== Conjugation ==== ==== Derived terms ==== === References === === Further reading === “ryhtyä”, in Kielitoimiston sanakirja [Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish]‎[2] (in Finnish) (online dictionary, continuously updated), Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen verkkojulkaisuja 35, Helsinki: Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskus (Institute for the Languages of Finland), 2004–, retrieved 3 July 2023
