rukoilla

التعريفات والمعاني

== Finnish == === Etymology === ruko- +‎ -illa. According to Häkkinen (2023), the root may be ruko (“haycock”). The word would have originally meant "to assemble, put together into haycocks" (found in dialects), and the shift to mean "to pray" was originally figurative use of this sense in reference to the position of the hands while praying. The Sami word (such as in Northern Sami rohkadallat) is likely a loan from Finnish. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈrukoi̯lːɑˣ/, [ˈruko̞i̯lːɑ̝(ʔ)] Rhymes: -ukoilːɑ Syllabification(key): ru‧koil‧la Hyphenation(key): ru‧koil‧la === Verb === rukoilla (intransitive, transitive, usually atelic) (religion) to pray (figuratively) to pray, beg, implore, beseech [with illative of third infinitive ‘to do’] ==== Conjugation ==== ==== Derived terms ==== ==== Related terms ==== rukous === References === === Further reading === “rukoilla”, in Kielitoimiston sanakirja [Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish]‎[1] (in Finnish) (online dictionary, continuously updated), Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen verkkojulkaisuja 35, Helsinki: Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskus (Institute for the Languages of Finland), 2004–, retrieved 3 July 2023 === Anagrams === kourilla, kuorilla
