From Old Swedish ringa, from Middle Low German ringe, from Old Saxon (gi)ringi (“light”), from Proto-Germanic *ga- + *reng-ja, of uncertain origin, but possibly from Proto-Indo-European *wrengʷʰ- (“to squeeze, wring”) and cognate with Proto-Germanic *wringaną (“to squeeze, wring”), Ancient Greek ῥίμφα (rhímpha, “fast, quickly”).
Cognate with Danish ringe, Norwegian Bokmål ringe, German ring, gering and Dutch gering.
