First attested idiomatically in the 1930s alongside the longer form resumo da ópera em português (“summary of the opera in Portuguese”), which is no longer in use. In the first half of the 20th century, vendors outside of theaters commonly sold pamphlets containing summarized operas translated into Portuguese, touting resumos da ópera em português (see quotations under sense 2). The name was also used in reference to radio-broadcast recordings of operas.
