Possibly from Spanish porongo (“calabash; dried gourd container; large earthenware jar”), from Quechua purunku (“calabash, plant and fruit and vessel of the calabash vine”), itself probably an ancient wanderwort from the South Sea for an inedible variety of calabash vine.
