From Proto-Finnic *pooli (compare Estonian pool (“half”)), from Proto-Uralic *pälä (compare Northern Sami bealli, Komi-Zyrian пӧв (pöv), Northern Mansi па̄л (pāl, “half, side”), Hungarian fél (“half”), Tundra Nenets пеля (pyelya)).
