Ultimately from Latin pungō (“to puncture”), either analogically derived from Catalan punxí, from the perfect form of the Latin verb, or through a Vulgar Latin *punctiāre, itself possibly reaching Catalan (and the Spanish equivalent punchar) through a Valencian Mozarabic intermediate. Compare also Spanish punzar, pinchar, and Occitan ponchar.
