Cognate with Latvian pràts (“mind, intellect”), Old Prussian prātin (“counsel”). Plausibly related to Proto-Germanic *frōdaz (“wise, cautious”), Latin pretium (“price”), from Proto-Indo-European *pret- (“to understand, interpret”). Cf. pràsti (“to acquire a habit, understand”), and see Latvian prast for more.
