Borrowed from Late Latin praefixum, from Latin praefixus, past participle of praefīgō (“to (fix, fasten, set up) in front”, “I fix on the (end, extremity)”) (from prae- (“before”) + fīgō (“to fix”, “to fasten”, “to affix”)). By surface analysis, pre- + fixo.
