From Proto-Finnic *peeli, from Proto-Uralic *päle (“side”). Cognates include Estonian peel, Moksha пяль (päľ) and Hungarian fél. Compare also Hungarian ajtófél, its second element of which might originate from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pele, *pēle (“column, stang”) (if not the same as the aforementioned root).
