picciriḍḍu

التعريفات والمعاني

== Sicilian == === Alternative forms === picciriddu, picciridu === Etymology === Uncertain. Possibly from an earlier *piccilillu, then innerly rhotacized. Probably from an unattested Norman or Occitan superstrate/adstrate, because of the palatalization of the -cc- nexus. Eventually derived from Latin *piccus, borrowed from Proto-Celtic *bikkos (“small, little”); possibly influenced (and/or conflated) by dissimilation by Latin paucus (“few, little”). Cognate with Neapolitan piccerillo and Greek πιτσιρίκος (pitsiríkos). Compare Provençal picho and pechin. See also Sicilian picca and picciottu. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˌpit.t͡ʃiˈɾi.ɖɖu/, [ˌpit.t͡ʃɪˈɾi.ɖɖʊ], [-ɖʊ] Hyphenation: pic‧ci‧rì‧ḍḍu === Noun === picciriḍḍu m (plural picciriḍḍi) boy, child (male or of unspecified gender) small, little young (broadly) A person who has not yet reached adulthood, whether natural (puberty), cultural (initiation), or legal (majority).
