== English == === Alternative forms === pastrame (rare) pastromi (dated) === Etymology === Borrowed from Yiddish פּאַסטראַמע (pastrame), from Romanian pastramă, from Ottoman Turkish باصدرمه (modern Turkish pastırma), a variation of bastırma (“dried meat”), from root bas- (“to press”). It is sometimes claimed that the origin of the Turkish word is Greek παστώνω (pastóno, “I salt”), from Ancient Greek παστός (pastós, “sprinkled with salt, salted”). The English spelling ending in -mi is probably from the influence of salami. === Pronunciation === (UK) IPA(key): /pæˈstɹɑːmi/, /pəˈstɹɑːmi/ (US) enPR: pə-sträʹmē, IPA(key): /pəˈstɹɑːmi/ === Noun === pastrami (countable and uncountable, plural pastramis) A seasoned smoked cut of beef, traditionally made from a navel cut. ==== Related terms ==== ==== Descendants ==== → Cebuano: pastrami → German: Pastrami → Spanish: pastrami ==== Translations ==== === See also === corned beef smoked meat (a similar deli meat made from a brisket cut) salt beef smoked beef === References === === Anagrams === pastirma == Cebuano == === Etymology === From English pastrami. === Pronunciation === Hyphenation: pas‧tra‧mi === Noun === pastrami a pastrami == Finnish == === Etymology === From Yiddish פּאַסטראַמע (pastrame). === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈpɑstrɑmi/, [ˈpɑ̝s̠.trɑ̝mi] Rhymes: -ɑstrɑmi Syllabification(key): past‧ra‧mi Hyphenation(key): past‧ra‧mi === Noun === pastrami pastrami ==== Declension ==== === Further reading === “pastrami”, in Kielitoimiston sanakirja [Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish]‎[1] (in Finnish) (online dictionary, continuously updated), Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen verkkojulkaisuja 35, Helsinki: Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskus (Institute for the Languages of Finland), 2004–, retrieved 3 July 2023 == French == === Etymology === From Romanian pastramă, probably through Yiddish and possibly through English, that from Ottoman Turkish باصدرمه (modern Turkish pastırma). === Pronunciation === === Noun === pastrami m (plural pastramis) pastrami == Portuguese == === Etymology === From Romanian pastramă, probably through Yiddish and possibly through English, that from Ottoman Turkish باصدرمه (modern Turkish pastırma). === Noun === pastrami m (plural pastramis) pastrami (seasoned cut of smoked beef)
