From at least early Medieval Latin pandōrium (“piped instrument”), after Pan, according to Isidore of Seville, from Ancient Greek Πάν (Pán). Writing in thirteenth century Iberia, Juan Gil de Zamora, closely following Isidore but altering the passage, describes it as an instrument similar to the tambourine.
