pää (“head, top”) + oma (“one's own”). As an economic term, first used in the late 18th century, and likely expanded from the grain-related sense. It is also possible that it was semantically equated with Medieval Latin capitāle, derived from caput (“head”), due to it containing the word pää (“head”).
