Of uncertain origin. Perhaps from Proto-Finno-Ugric *arpa (“soothsaying instrument, magic instrument, potion”) + -os (noun-forming suffix indicating occupation). The Finno-Ugric words may have Turkish relations. Compare Ottoman Turkish آغری (ağrı, “pain, ache”).
