From Proto-Finnic *orpoi (compare Estonian orb), derived from *orpa(s), borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hárbʰas (compare Sanskrit अर्भ (árbha)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃órbʰos (compare English orphan, Ancient Greek ὀρφανός (orphanós), Old Armenian որբ (orb)). The same word was also borrowed into other Uralic languages (compare Erzya уроз (uroz), Hungarian árva), but likely independently.
