From Middle Irish ordaigid, from Old Irish ordaigidir (“to order, to command”), from ord (“order, sequence, arrangement”), a learned borrowing from Latin ōrdō (“order, rank”). By surface analysis, ord (“order”) + -igh. Cognate with Scottish Gaelic òrdaich and Manx oardee.
