From Proto-Finnic *oppidak (compare Estonian õppima), from Proto-Finno-Ugric *woppe-(j-) (“to see, inspect”) (compare Northern Khanty вопиты (wopity, “to visit; to stalk”), Eastern Mansi [script needed] (wopj-)). Originally meant “to go look, check, examine (a trap, etc.)” as part of hunting vocabulary, whence “to (go) see, check” (still found in Old Literary Finnish), then “to learn” (already in Proto-Finnic).
