From Latin opācus (“shaded, dark”) + Latin clāvus (“nail”).
Coined by New Zealand entomologist Alan C. Eyles in 1973 as the specific epithet of Dieuches opaciclavus, a species of rhyparochromid (at the time lygaeid) true bug.
