=== Etymology ===
From Proto-Tocharian *ānelme, abstract form of *ān- (“to breathe”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁- (“to breathe”), the same source as anāsk- (“to breathe”), āñme (“self, soul”), and añiye (“breath”). Cognate with Latin animus (“spirit”) (whence English animal), German Atmen (“breath”), etc. Also possibly from *h₂en-h₂enh₁mo- (“one whose breath is upon them”), a form of the above root.
