From the Ancient Greek ὀνοκένταυρος (onokéntauros), an alternative form of ὀνοκένταυρα (onokéntaura, a kind of tailless ape, a kind of demon haunting wild places), presumably from ὄνος (ónos, “ass”) + κένταυρος (kéntauros, “centaur”).
