From Middle Dutch ongehiere, from Old Dutch *ungihiuri, from Proto-West Germanic *ungahiurī (see also *unhiurī). The unprefixed form of this word still existed in Middle Dutch as ghehure, meaning "pleasant". Compare German ungeheuer.
Possibly related to eunjer (“wizard”).
