From Proto-Rutara *-hinda. Cognate with Haya muhinda (“member of royal family in Kyamtwara, Kyanja, Karagwe, and Ihangiro”), Kerewe omuhinda (“of royal family, prince”) Rwanda-Rundi abahinda (“very good hima family”), Bukusu uwo'muhinda (“prince or princess”), Kwaya muhinda (“servant”), Kitembo mwinda (“debt”). Ultimately from Proto-Great Lakes Bantu *-hindia (authority, able person). From Proto-Bantu *-pɨnd- (“fold, hem, plait, turn, invert, change”).
