Deverbal from omroepen, coined by Dutch radio pioneer Jan Corver in 1922 inspired by the historical occupation of omroeper (“town crier”). Equivalent to om (“around”) + roep (“call”). Compare Middle Dutch ommeroep (“public proclamation or announcement”).
