oma (“own”) + tunto (“feeling, awareness, conscience”). Coined by Finnish clergyman Mikael Agricola, somewhat inspired by Latin conscientia and German Gewissen, although not a direct calque. The oma (“own”) likely reflects Agricola's theological views (based on those of Martin Luther) of human self-consciousness.
