Learned borrowing from Arabic أُقْنُوم (ʔuqnūm), ultimately from Classical Syriac ܩܢܽܘܡܳܐ (qnōmā, “self, essence, person, hypostasis”). "Infamous person" sense was only popularized by Mochtar Lubis in late 1960, themed around PKI.
