From Proto-Finnic *nukkudak, of unknown further origin. Cognates include Karelian n'ukkuo, Ludian nukkuda, Northern Sami nohkkat (possibly from Finnic) and possibly Estonian tukkuma and Livonian tukkõ (compare nousta ~ Estonian tõusma). May also be related to Erzya нувсемс (nuvsems, “be nodding”).
