Shortening of nossa senhora (literally “our lady”), itself a shortening of minha nossa senhora (literally “my our lady”).
The expression minha nossa senhora is probably influenced by meu Deus (literally “my God”), similarly to English Oh, my God and Spanish Dios mío.
