From Old Norse jóll, jóli, whence also Faroese jólur, Norwegian Nynorsk jol, from Proto-Germanic *eulaz. Rebracketing of hvannjóli, from hvǫnn (“angelica”) + jóli, which is attested in Fóstbrœðra saga. Related to auli, Norwegian aul, aule (“hollow plant stem”); also to Ancient Greek αὐλός (aulós), Lithuanian aũlas.
