Any mountain that extends more than 9,000 feet but less than 10,000 feet above sea level. ==== Usage notes ==== Since Mount Everest is only 8,848 metres tall, there are no nine-thousanders (sense 1) on Earth. Usage of sense 1 this term is either theoretical or referring to an extraterrestrial mountain.
