Borrowed from Old East Slavic нить (nitĭ), from Proto-Slavic *nitь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *nítis, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)nh₁itis, from *(s)neh₁- (“to spin, sew”); compare Russian нить (nitʹ). Doublet of niis.
