Inherited from Proto-Albanian *en-gaska, from *gʷm̥sḱéti, making it a cognate of Ancient Greek βάσκω (báskō). The variant ngaj from a slightly different root (see ngaj), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeh₁- (“leave”). Compare English go, Ancient Greek κιχάνω (kikhánō, “to meet with, arrive at”), Sanskrit जहाति (jáhāti, “to renounce”), Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬰𐬁𐬨𐬌 (zazāmi).
