التعريفات والمعاني
== Finnish ==
=== Etymology ===
neula (“needle”) + -oa
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): /ˈneu̯loɑˣ/, [ˈne̞u̯lo̞ɑ̝(ʔ)]
Rhymes: -euloɑ
Syllabification(key): neu‧lo‧a
Hyphenation(key): neu‧loa
=== Verb ===
neuloa
(transitive)
to knit
Synonym: (see the usage notes) kutoa
(dialectal, Western Finnish) to sew
Synonym: ommella
==== Usage notes ====
Originally Western Finnish used kutoa and Eastern Finnish used neuloa for knitting, and their use remains highly regional in informal and less technical contexts. Kotus accepts both forms as standard, but in technical terminology, the latter is preferred to distinguish it from kutoa (“to weave”). neuloa is a word in the western dialects as well, but there it means "to sew", not "to knit"; the former meaning is rarely encountered in standard Finnish, as ommella (“to sew”) is used.
